Good evening.

My name is Danieru and I came from America. I am Hippo’s intern currently working at the Hippo head office.

I came to Japan four months ago. When I first arrived, I knew absolutely no Japanese. Even now, I don’t know very much.

The little I know is very informal. I have no idea how to speak formal Japanese, which I should be using now.

When I came to Japan four months ago, I knew maybe five words - all greetings.

- Good day

- Good evening

- I’m Danieru!

- Do you understand English?

- I do not understand Japanese.

And now, four months later, I can understand much more.

How? How did I learn Japanese?

HIPPO!

By doing Hippo activities; singing the sounds, mimicking, SADA, I was introduced to a new and correct way of learning languages.

Since I was little, I dream was to become a multilingual person.

I have this desire even now. I was born in Ukraine, so I can speak Russian and English and I studied Spanish. Currently, I am learning Japanese.

Thanks to Hippo, I now know the correct way to learn languages. I can finally make my wish come true.

I’ve come to understand that the environment in which you learn languages is very important.

Hippo understands this, and therefore, has created an environment where you feel absolutely no pressure while learning a language.

Everyone tells you, ”good job”. Everyone tells me ”Danieru, you’re Japanese is good!”, to which I reply ”It’s not good! Not at all!”

Even though, deep down inside, I think, ”Yay! My Japanese is good!”

That is Hippo’s everyday environment. When you are in this environment, you are not afraid to make mistakes.

Hippo also taught me that making mistakes is absolutely okay. Making mistakes is crucial to learn.

As a result, I make many many mistakes.

For example, I remember being at the train station, inside of the train, when I heard ”Orenji migi gawa desu.” (The orange is on your right side.)

“What?” I thought, ”The orange is on my right? Where? I want to eat it!”

However, it was ”Odeguchi migi gawa desu” that was said. (The exit is on your right side.)

How embarrassing!

Next, I heard ”Mamonaku, takoyaki densha mairimasu.” (The takoyaki train is arriving.)

“What? The takoyaki train is coming?” I exclaimed, ”I want to ride in that train!”

However, it was, ”Mamonaku, kako eki teisha mairimasu” that was said. (thelocal train is arriving.)

Embarrassing, right?

However, thanks to Hippo, I know that making embarrassing mistakes is absolutely fine. It’s necessary.

If want to become a multilingual person, I must make them in order to learn.

Maybe, I will learn French next. I will make many embarrassing mistakes.

Maybe I will learn German next. I will make many embarrassing mistakes.

Maybe I will learn Chinese next. I will make many embarrassing mistakes.

Making embarrassing mistakes is absolutely fine. It’s the only way I can reach my dream and become a multilingual person.
